Artist Statement
I know that many could say that they would love to be 5 again or at least miss being a careless, curious child because that was when we were more creative and true artists at heart without even realizing it. I want that. And I hate wanting that for myself, but I blame the internet. When there is so much negativity in the present, through life or social media, I find that the majority of people seek refuge in their memories from childhood for shelter from reality. However, I feel that no matter how blissful reminiscing might be, romanticizing the nostalgia of what once was can be harmful, because no matter how badly we want to we can never truly go back. In my work I depict my emotions about it instead of dwelling on it. I’m compelled to make art when such emotions/feelings or perhaps old memories and nostalgia make me feel ways that I can't explain with words. I hope to reflect feelings in such a way that others can relate to, and when depicting sadness or nostalgia or the desire to turn back time, this is a universal experience. Aside from all the sad stuff, I also like to create work that reflects the tranquil, pleasant aspects from my life and hope for people to feel that same calmness from the piece.
Charcoal and graphite allow me to depict realness in a satisfying way that also brings appreciation from others as everyone can see and understand it. Acrylic paint gives me the freedom to play with color and bring out that childlike, nostalgic feel that I’m shooting for.
My work is peaceful, melancholy, realistic, and timeless and I would hate to hear someone describe it as boring or uninventive. I want viewers to look for deeper meaning that may not necessarily be obvious and attach their own current or past feelings to them.
